IEW Assignment 2

This is the 2nd and 3rd poetry assignment for my students in which I attempted as well.

Native Americans
Can you see them?

The hair hangs limp in the hot summer sun.
The eyes sweep the forest, noticing every small movement.
The voice greets a new visitor in a strange tongue.
The hands skillfully grasp the knife.
The bodies crouch with anticipation.
The legs dance with joy at the bountiful harvest.

They frequently leave their family to go on a hunt.
They remember the years before the white man walked their forest.
They are the Native Americans.

Explorers
Can you see them?

The hair twists in the ocean breeze.
The eyes survey the coast worried about unfriendly faces.
The mouth hesitantly pledges friendship to a strange new people.
The hands eagerly clap with excitement.
Their bodies stretch out on land after the long trip across the ocean.

They always leave a footprint.
They remember the families they left back home.
They wonder if they will ever make it back.
They are the New World Explorers.

America, IEW assignment

This is the first assignment given to my students at the co-op.
I did it too.

America
Land of....

Sparkling seashores that stretch out in the setting sun
Immense, green forests with no end in sight
Rugged, snow-capped mountains of the remote west
Raging, splashing rivers that wind through wild country
Vast, golden plains of the mid-west with views of forever

America,
Land of....
A strong, determined people who followed their dreams
An adventurous people who didn't let difficulties get in their way

My own home sweet and God-blessed America

But Why?

You are Here and You do hear.
My grasping, my groping, but why?
You are the light I see.

You are the Rock coming up out of the sea.
My tossing, my turning, but why?
You are the shelter I seek.

You are passionate and compassionate.
My wandering, my fretting, but why?
You are the Shepherd I need.

Listening

I am listening to His voice, yet what if I’ve missed it already.
My ears are wide open, yet I can’t hear anything.
Everyone understands, yet no one understands.
We haven’t been through this before, yet we are going through it again.
You say you want me to come, yet I’m not all there when I do.
What service?
What work?
What people?
What place?
What name?
Did I hurt you? or Did you hurt me?
Have I forgiven you? or Have you forgiven me?
Do I really care about you? or Do you really care about me?
What really matters in relationships? or What relationships really matter?
Goodbye. Hello.
Visit me. Never come over.
See you soon. See you after a while.
Stay with me. I need to get away.
